Relationships between greenness and low birth weight: investigating the interaction and mediation effects of air pollution.

Laurent O, Benmarhnia T, Milesi C, Hu J, Kleeman MJ, Cockburn M, Wu J. 2019. Relationships between greenness and low birth weight: investigating the interaction and mediation effects of air pollution. Environmental Research 175: 124-132.

This large study examined the relationships between term low birth weight (< 2500 g) and residential greenness, as well as the potential influence of air pollution in these relationships using 2001-2008 birth certificate data over the entire state of California. In total, 72,632 term low birth weight cases were included. A reduction in the risk of term low birth weight was associated with an increase in green space exposure. The results also suggest that green space might benefit to birth weight partly through a local reduction in air pollution.
