We applied a key characteristics approach originally developed for carcinogens to female reproductive hazard identification. We identified 10 key characteristics of female reproductive toxicants. As proof of principle, we showed that three chemicals for which there is strong epidemiological and animal toxicology evidence for female reproductive toxicity each display several of the key characteristics. We propose that these key characteristics can be used to systematically search, organize, integrate, and evaluate mechanistic evidence of female reproductive toxicity.
