The authors found that prenatal exposure to the common environmental pollutant benzo[a]pyrene destroys germ cells in the developing ovary and causes ovarian mutations in the daughters exposed in the womb. These ovarian mutations may play a role in the increased incidence of ovarian tumors that Dr. Luderer’s group previously found in female mice exposed prenatally to benzo[a]pyrene.
